Music since 1950
The explosive changes to the classical and avant garde musical traditions since the Second World War extended expression, experiments, and innovation in music in previously unimagined ways. But they are most important to musicians of the twenty-first century because they represent the expressions of contemporary cultures concerned with life and art of our own time. This course will cover such techniques and trends as serialism, chance, experimentalism, electronic music, minimalism, world music, and microtonality but also music that does not fit neatly under any particular label. Students will analyze works and draw connections between the composers of our own times.
